Fed: Jobless rate fails to fall in nearly half of Australia's regions

CANBERRA, April 30 AAP - Unemployment rates failed to fall in almost half of Australia'surban and regional areas in the past year despite the recent surge in jobs, official figuresshowed today.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) said jobs grew in 63 percent of regions in the 12 months to March while the unemployment rate fell in 56 per centof areas.

"North and west Brisbane recorded a 12.6 per cent increase in employment while theunemployment rate fell by 1.5 percentage points to 8.6 per cent," it said.

"Murray-Murrumbidgee in New South Wales recorded an 11.5 per cent increase in employmentwhile the unemployment rate fell 0.9 percentage points to 4.8 per cent."

The unemployment rate in northern and western South Australia dropped 0.4 percentagepoint to 8.8 per cent while jobs grew 6.8 per cent.

The figures are not seasonally adjusted.

Sydney's north western suburbs (Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai and Baulkham Hills) had the lowestjobless rate in the country during the March quarter (3.7 per cent) while Queensland'sWide Bay-Burnett region had the highest (13.4 per cent), DEWR said.
